Gun Milan and the 36-point Ashtakoota system

Gun Milan compares eight traditional Moon-based components. Read what the points represent, what they leave out, and why component evidence matters more than a score in isolation.

01

The eight kootas behind the total

Ashtakoota assigns different maximum points to Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Their points sum to thirty-six. Each component applies its own traditional mapping to the pair’s Moon signs, nakshatras, or related categories.

The total is a convenient summary of those component outcomes. It is not a probability, a scientific measurement, or a percentage of marital success. Two pairs with the same total can have very different component patterns.

  • Varna: up to 1 point
  • Vashya: up to 2 points
  • Tara: up to 3 points
  • Yoni: up to 4 points
  • Graha Maitri: up to 5 points
  • Gana: up to 6 points
  • Bhakoot: up to 7 points
  • Nadi: up to 8 points

How a reproducible Gun Milan result is made

The engine calculates the sidereal Moon position for each supported birth instant, derives the rashi and nakshatra, and applies a named version of each koota rule. It stores the component facts and their evidence before any explanatory text is written.

When an uncertain time spans a nakshatra or rashi boundary, affected components cannot be presented with full confidence. The report identifies that limitation instead of using a default time to force a total.

03

What to read before the total

Look first for unavailable or boundary-sensitive inputs. Then read the eight component outcomes, paying attention to where a concern is concentrated. Review any Nadi or Bhakoot exception as a separate claim with visible evidence. Only then consider the total within the chosen tradition.

A threshold such as eighteen points is a customary heuristic in some practices, not a universal permission line. Families and astrologers may weight components and exceptions differently.

MangalyaYoga does not combine Gun Milan points with practical questionnaire answers. Both sections remain independent so their meaning stays clear.

04

What the thirty-six points cannot answer

Gun Milan does not ask how a couple resolves conflict, manages debt, shares care work, supports careers, sets family boundaries, or feels about children and relocation. It also cannot determine honesty, safety, affection, or consent.

Use the chart result to prepare questions for a traditional review. Use a separate compatibility conversation to understand the people who may build the marriage.
